Colin Firth : "not handsome enough" ??

Cet article est plus anecdotique qu'autre chose mais je me suis dit qu'il méritait tout de même son propre topic.  Le Daily Mail a révélé hier que dirigeants de la BBC avaient hésité à engager Colin Firth pour jouer Mr Darcy dans l'adaptation BBC de Pride & Prejudice car ils ne le trouvaient pas assez séduisant. La productrice Sue Birtwistle, convaincue par le talent et le charisme du comédien, s'est battu pour faire accepter son choix. L'article nous montre qu'il s'en est a fallu de peu qu'un autre acteur soit choisi à sa place. Si ça avait été le cas, le personnage de Darcy n'aurait sans doute pas eu un tel impact et le phénomène Jane Austen n'aurait pas eu une telle ampleur... Ca fait réfléchir

Colin Firth almost lost out on the role that secured his leading-man status because TV executives thought his hair was too ginger for the dashing Mr Darcy.

The writer Andrew Davies, who adapted Pride and Prejudice for the BBC, and Alan Yentob, then BBC1 controller, didn’t want to cast Firth.Yentob at first believed he was not handsome enough to portray Jane Austen’s brooding hero.

It was decided to dye his hair a much darker shade shortly before production began in 1994.

‘I was doubtful about him because of his gingerish hair and Mr Darcy with that colour hair would not have been right,’ said Davies, who has also adapted classic novels including Bleak House and Middlemarch for television.

‘So, to be honest, I never saw him as a Darcy,’ he said in an interview with the Sunday Times.
‘The only answer was to dye his hair to a dark brown going on black for the part.’ 
The programme’s producer Sue Birtwistle, has also revealed that Yentob did ‘not think Firth was handsome enough’, recalling: ‘I had one of those very early clunky mobile phones, and Alan rang me when I was driving in a snowstorm to tell me that Firth was not good-looking enough as Darcy.’

However, she claims that she managed to persuade Yentob that Firth was perfect for the role.

The drama went on to draw an audience of almost 11m when it was broadcast in 1995. 
It was the role that secured Colin Firth’s status as one of the most dashing leading men in television history.

Firth has since gone on to win a string of awards including a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of King George VI in The King’s Speech.

But the actor admitted he had never read Jane Austen’s novel before taking the role and nearly turned it down because at 35, he couldn’t believe he was romantic lead material.

And while the part made him a household name, he admitted it wasn’t always easy being constantly associated with a literary hero.

He said: ‘In the years between Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones, I don’t think there was a single interview in any newspaper that didn’t have Darcy in the headline.’ 
Despite the show’s success, said ITV initially rejected the chance to televise the series after it was turned down by Greg Dyke, who later became director-general of the BBC, and Brian Tesler.

‘Brian and Greg did not think it would work for them even though I told them the scripts were fantastic,’ said Nick Elliott, head of drama at London Weekend Television. ‘They didn’t think Pride and Prejudice suited an ITV audience.’

The scripts were later sold to the BBC and despite rejecting Pride and Prejudice, ITV later made versions of Austen’s Northanger Abbey, Mansfield Park and Emma.

The scene where Darcy emerges from a lake in a wet shirt made Firth a global sex symbol.

De rien ! Je me demande quel(s) autre(s) acteur(s) ils avaient envisagé dans ce rôle ..

C'est la question que je me suis posée..

Je ne suis pas une grande fan de Darcy, tel qu'il est dans le roman, j'avoue Darcy est trop orgueilleux à mon goût ...

BUT dans cette adaptation le jeu de Colin Firth est superbe, qu'importe le physique il a su s'approprier le personnage "voire même à le rendre plus sympathique, que l'idée que j'avais à la lecture du roman".

Car si Darcy est souvent présenté et vu comme une forme d'idéal, Colin Firth a su par son jeu montrer toutes les facettes du personnage telles que décrites par Jane Austen, en tant que lectrice je n'avais retenu que celle qui me convenait (notamment le côté détestable de Darcy) et travailler son rôle de la sorte n'est possible qu'à la condition d'être un véritable acteur, le physique seul ne suffit pas.

Bref I  Colin Firth et non I  Darcy et le titre de sujet est génial

Je n'ai jamais été une fan absolue ni de Colin Firth, ni de Darcy. Mais c'est quand même un excellent acteur et j'avais vraiment adoré l'auto dérision dont il faisait preuve dans Le journal de Bridget Jones.
J'ai vraiment été impressionnée par sa performance dans Le discours d'un roi.

Ceci dit, je comprends qu'ils aient hésité. Je ne trouve pas Colin Firth parfaitement beau et j'avoue que je voyais Darcy avec des traits plus fins et anguleux. MAIS, Firth a un charisme incroyable et est parfaitement rentré dans le rôle pourtant assez complexe, comme le soulignait Constance. Et il a un regard magnétique.

Je suis d'accord avec toi, Akina. Colin Firth a un regard magnétique (les yeux bleus de MMF sont certes très beaux mais ne me font pas le même effet... ), beaucoup de charisme, de prestance et est très séduisant. Une beauté parfaite ne fait pas le poids face à tout ça !

Oui il a un sacré charisme cet acteur!

Dans "A single man" il est éblouissant, très émouvant, ce film m'a énormément touchée.
