BBC1 has commissioned a three-part adaptation of Jessie Burton’s haunting period thriller The Miniaturist.
The new series is likely to air in 2017 and has been adapted by the scriptwriter John Brownlow, who wrote the Gwyneth Paltrow film Ted and Sylvia.
Burton's book is set in 1686 and begins with eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman beginning a new life as the wife of wealthy Amsterdam merchant, Johannes Brandt.
But instead of Johannes, she's met by his cold sister Marin and quickly realises that nothing is quite right in the Brandt household.
When Johannes finally appears he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a doll's house replica of their home which is to be furnished by an elusive Miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror what is happening within the house in unexpected ways and seem to be predicting and unravelling the future with eery accuracy.
Burton’s book was one of the fastest selling debut novels in a decade, shifting more than a million copies in 37 countries. It also won Waterstone's Book of the Year, and the National Book Awards Overall Book of the Year 2014.
The author said of the new drama: “It's an almost indescribable thrill to know the characters and story I invented in The Miniaturist are going to be given a new life in such an exciting way. John Brownlow's script is perfect. Short of actually being published, it's the best news I've ever had.”
Executive producer Kate Sinclair added: “I read and pursued The Miniaturist in manuscript for over a year before publication, so utterly passionate was I about its astoundingly beauty and its rich and diverse characters. Jessie has created an exquisite gem, making the world of seventeenth century Amsterdam live and breathe in incredible detail whilst also delivering a fast paced thriller full of intrigue and dark secrets. John Brownlow has done a wonderful adaptation and I feel privileged to be making this for the BBC. Think Wolf Hall meets Tulip Fever.”
Filming will take place over the winter in both Holland and the UK.

J'ai hâte de voir ça car j'avais adoré le roman. J'espère que l'on retrouvera l'ambiance du roman et j'ai hâte de découvrir qui aura le rôle de Marin, c'est un personnage fascinant!

Full of hopes and dreams, she has come from the country to begin a new life as the wife of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt (Hassell).
Instead, she’s met by his cold sister Marin (Garai) and their servants (played by Hayley Squires and Paapa Essiedu) and quickly realizes that nothing is as it seems. When Brandt finally appears, he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet that is a miniature replica of their home which is to be furnished by an elusive Miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror what is happening within the house in unexpected ways and Nella soon realizes the escalating dangers that await them all.
“From the moment I read The Miniaturist in manuscript, I knew in my gut it was something truly unique – an exquisite mix of another world with the resonances of our own, not to mention characters to die for,” said producer Kate Sinclair.
“I couldn’t be happier to tell this amazing and atmospheric story with such a wonderful group of people,” added Taylor-Joy. “I immediately fell in love with Nella’s resilience and am so looking forward to telling her story and helping to bring this magical book to life.”

Anya Taylor-Joy, Romola Garai and Alex Hassell will star in period thriller “The Miniaturist” for BBC One, the broadcaster announced Friday. The adaptation of the novel by Jessie Burton is produced by The Forge for the BBC and co-produced with PBS’ Masterpiece.
Now filming, “The Miniaturist” is set in 1686 and stars Taylor-Joy, the breakout star of recent horror hits “The Witch” and “Split,” as a young country woman who arrives in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of a wealthy merchant (Hassell). When her husband presents her with a wedding gift of a cabinet that is a miniature replica of their home, furnished by an elusive miniaturist, she realizes the tiny creations mirror what is happening within the household and appear to predict the future with disturbing precision.

Garai plays Hassell’s cold and domineering sister.
“I couldn’t be happier to tell this amazing and atmospheric story with such a wonderful group of people. I immediately fell in love with Nella’s resilience and am so looking forward to telling her story and helping to bring this magical book to life,” said Taylor-Joy of her leading role.
Adapted by John Brownlow, “The Miniaturist” is directed by Spanish director Guillem Morales and produced by Gethin Scourfield. Production is now underway, taking place in the Netherlands and the U.K.
The cast also features Hayley Squires, following her BAFTA-nominated role in Ken Loach’s “I, Daniel Blake.” Royal Shakespeare Company actor Paapa Essiedu and “Humans” star Emily Berrington also star.
“The assembled cast is perfect to the vision I had in my mind’s eye in every way,” said Burton.
Kate Sinclair will serve as executive producer for The Forge alongside Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC and Rebecca Eaton for Masterpiece.

J'aimerais lire le livre depuis longtemps... Si quelqu'un souhaite faire une lecture commune avec moi, qu'il n'hésite pas!

Merci pour l'info! Le livre ne m'intéresse pas particulièrement mais je travaille à monter et enrichir une petite expo de livres sur les adaptations en série ou film à la bibliothèque. Alors je note!

Je n'ai pas aimé le livre mais je jetterai un œil à l'adaptation.

La mini-série devrait arriver le mois prochain, soit un peu plus tôt que prévu, à cause de la suppression d' Ordeal by innocence de la grille des programmes.

J'ai vu les deux épisodes de cette adaptation que j'ai trouvé plutôt pas mal mais un peu décevante par rapport à ma lecture du roman que j'avais adoré. Le casting est bon et les décors réussis mais j'ai trouvé des longueurs à ces épisodes.
