La collection "British Library Women Writers" pour la British Library

Cette collection de rééditions d'œuvres de romancières anglaises méconnues sera disponible dès ce printemps. D'autres titres suivront cet automne.
Cette collection est une initiative de la British Library (à qui on doit aussi la série des Crime classics)

The British Library is releasing a series of out-of-print books by largely forgotten female writers this spring to coincide with the forthcoming exhibition “Unfinished Business: The Fight for Women’s Rights”.
Starting with four books from the 1910s, 20s, 30s and 40s, the Women Writers series focuses on authors who enjoyed broad, popular appeal in their day. Each work sees fictional heroines challenge the attitudes of their time and highlight women’s experience inside and outside the home.
It begins with The Tree of Heaven by May Sinclair, a suffragist and British novelist who was dubbed "the readable modernist". Her 1917 book follows the fortunes of the Harrison family as the children grow up in the shadow of the First World War and Dorothy’s brothers go off, one by one, to the trenches, while she becomes involved with the suffrage movement.
Bad Girl by American short story author and Hollywood screenwriter Viña Delmar follows. Published in 1928, Bad Girl was a bestseller in its day as a cautionary tale about attitudes to premarital sex, pregnancy and childbirth in 1920s Harlem.
Third in the series is 1931’s My Husband Simon by Mollie Panter-Downes. Set in 1930s London, literary Nevis Falconer struggles to be a writer and also manage her marriage with increasing independence outside the home.
The fourth title is Chatterton Square, a 1947 novel by James Tait Black Memorial Prize-winner and William author E H Young. The book concerns the complex web of relationships between two neighbouring families, the Blacketts and the Frasers. Framed by the advance of the Second World War, the mechanics of marriage and love are laid bare through the observation of three of the marital options open to the mid-century woman: unmarried, separated, miserably married.
The series launches in the spring with a further four titles to be released in the autumn.
Rebecca Nuotio, head of commerical brand development and sales, said: "What a magnificent way to mark the British Library’s forthcoming, hotly anticipated women’s rights show ‘Unfinished Business’. These books have been sourced from the library’s collections and, while not about women’s rights as such, the first four titles have a modern, forward-looking focus and provide a freshness of insight into women’s lives and the richness and excellence of their writing."

J'allais dire en espérant que ce soit mieux que les Crime classics et là je vois May Sinclair et Elizabeth von Arnim donc c'est bien parti.

Ces couvertures sont superbes

Rien que les couvertures pourrait m'inciter à acheter certains de ces livres que je ne connais pas
Dans ces livres, je ne connais que Elizabeth Von Arnim.

Oui, May Sinclair, c'est une sacrée bonne surprise !

Sinon, Father d'Elizabeth Von Arnim est sorti en français chez Archipoche.

Et, j'aimerais trop qu'ils fassent des marque-pages assortis aussi !

Oui je sais pour Père mais je voulais dire qu'avec 2 auteurs de cette trempe, on peut espérer que les autres soient aussi bons.

Oh my god ! Ces couvertures sont absolument splendides ! J'espère que mon niveau d'anglais me permettra d'en lire quelque uns (notamment le Von Arnim et le May Sinclair !!!).

Pour info, tous ces livres proposeront une postface écrite par le blogueur anglais Simon Thomas que je suis depuis quelques années et qui est plus ou moins un spécialiste de la littérature féminine et féministe de la 1ère moitié du XXème siècle.

Father, le 3 septembre.
O, the Brave Music et Tea is So Intoxicating en octobre.

Par contre, j'ai lu que Bad Girl ne paraîtra pas finalement ...

Une excellente idée, je trouve ça bien de pouvoir découvrir des personnalités un peu oubliées, en plus de ça les couvertures sont très attrayantes!

Quelle bonne idée de (re)mettre ces romancières en lumière! Beaucoup me sont inconnues, mais bien sûr le Elizabeth Von Arnim est tentant.

Ces couvertures sont une fois de plus à tomber à la renverse !

Je ne connais aucune de ces romancières, il faudra que je regarde d’un peu plus près les résumés

Oui, je l'ai lu et je ne l'ai pas aimé. Je m'ennuyais tellement que je crois que je ne l'ai pas terminé.

J'ai lu avec un grand plaisir ce recueil de nouvelles festives qui vient d'être publié dans cette collection.



Il y a quelques romancières et nouvellistes bien connues (Alice Munro, Muriel Spark, Maeve Binchy, EM Delafield, Stella Gibbons...) mais aussi plusieurs dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler. La sélection est très pointue sans l'être trop et surtout merveilleusement éclectique. Plusieurs nouvelles ont été publiées dans The New Yorker et elles sont excellentes. Mention spéciale, pour moi, à celle de l'américaine Barbara Robinson qui m'a beaucoup fait rire.

Emjy a parlé plus haut des postfaces écrites par Simon Thomas. Je viens de lire celle écrite dans The love child et j'ai vraiment beaucoup aimé son analyse.
Quelle belle découverte que cette collection !
