Ca reste encore à confirmer mais l'adaptation devrait être diffusée le 20 septembre sur la BBC (ce qui est beaucoup plus tôt que prévu mais ce n'est pas moi qui vais m'en plaindre )

Qu'est ce que j'ai hâte ! J'ai tellement aimé le roman

J'avais eu un espoir que Leslie était une femme pour pouvoir l'incorporer dans le challenge romancière Je ne sais pas ce que je vais faire, je ne suis pas sûre d'avoir le temps de lire le roman avant la diffusion de l'adaptation.

Ou alors tu gardes le téléfilm sous le coude pour plus tard ?

Je ne sais pas. Je suis presque à revenir sur ma sacro-sainte habitude de lire les livres avant. J'ai par exemple bien aimé The making of a lady, contrairement à celles qui ont lu le livre avant.

Oui, faut voir ... Moi je n'ai pas de règle, j'ai découvert plein de romans après avoir vu l'adaptation

Je pense que même si je n'avais pas lu le roman de Burnett avant, je n'aurais pas aimé The Making of a lady

Our exclusive pictures show Joanna as the beautiful and beguiling Marian Maudsley in the BBC's eagerly awaited adaptation of The Go-Between.

It is the first adaptation of L . P. Hartley's classic 1953 novel since the 1971 movie version, which starred big screen legends Julie Christie and Alan Bates as the illicit lovers and Dominic Guard as the boy whose life is transformed forever when he finds himself tangled up in their affair.

Adrian Hodges, who has written the new version for BBC One, accepts that Joanna and her co-star Ben Batt, who plays Ted Burgess, will be compared to both Christie and Bates but he is confident that the new adaptation will stand on its own merit.

He said: 'Like the whole of the rest of the world I fell in love with Julie Christie when I saw the original film. But I hope the performances of Joanna and Ben will be judged fairly and differently. Nobody is ever going to erase the memory of Julie Christie and Alan Bates and no one is trying to. But Jo's performance is striking


'Of course, Marian has to be beautiful and charming and capricious, but she is also a survivor who manipulates Leo to get what she wants. We didn't want someone in the role who is a waif and a victim and Joanna has got the beauty, the determination and a streak of strength in her.'

The Go-Between, which is a story of love across the social divide and the loss of teenage innocence, includes the opening line: 'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.'

It begins in 1900 and tells the story of a young boy called Leo Colston who agrees to spend a summer holiday in Norfolk with the wealthy Maudsley family.


Leo, who is from a humble background, immediately feels out of his depth but his position becomes even more complicated when he agrees to exchange love letters between Marian and her secret lover Ted, a tenant farmer.

Leo, who is drawn to both Marian and Ted, has no real idea of what he is being asked to do until the couple's affair spirals out of control and ends up transforming the lives of everyone involved.

Hodges said his new film, co-starring Vanessa Redgrave as the older Marian, Jim Broadbent and Lesley Manville, was an adaptation of the novel rather than the Joseph Losey film, which co-starred Redgrave's father Michael and which is now regarded as one of the best British films ever made.

He said: 'I am absolutely adapting the book. You can't worry about other people's films.'

Hodges said he was in no doubt that the central themes of the novel would resonate with a modern audience. He said: 'I think anyone can see this as a story which has contemporary relevance.

'There are certain things that never go away such as the things that you don't tell your children. The things you keep secret. The things that corrupt people's lives.'

It has been 20 years since Colin Firth emerged from a lake in a white shirt, sending a generation of Pride and Prejudice viewers into a swoon on their sofa.

But the nation’s women are set to seize control of the remotes once again, as the BBC’s new period drama goes one step further: nude swimming.

The Go-Between, an adaptation of the L P Hartley novel set in 1900, will see its male star walk naked from a lake and even engage in the second scene of topless scything on the BBC this year.

Appealing squarely to fans of Aidan Turner’s Poldark, it will tell the story of young, selfish love and passion across class boundaries and their disastrous consequences.

The 90-minute drama is one of four literary adaptations to be broadcast in September, alongside versions of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, An Inspector Calls and Cider With Rosie.

While many dramas, particularly the likes of Games of Thrones from the US, increasingly feature female nudity and graphic sex, the BBC has chosen to take its women viewers into account too.

In The Go-Between, named for the novel’s central teenage character who finds himself bearing messages between lovers, actor Ben Batt will take the role of farmer Ted Burgess.



He is one half of a secret and risky relationship with Marian Maudsley, the young and beautiful destined to marry a Viscount.

Viewers will be introduced to him swimming nude in a lake, pausing to speak to his uncomfortable upper-class neighbours before bearing his bottom in a graceful dive.

He will later be seen emerging from the lake nude, lying out to sunbathe while aristocratic women bathe in full dress nearby.

Further into the drama, he will be interrupted scything a hay field topless, in a remarkable coincidence filmed before a near-identical scene was shown in Poldark.

Adrian Hodges, who adapted the novel for the BBC, said programme-makers had thought about the appropriate level of nudity “very carefully”, as well as the programme’s one sex scene.

In particular, he said, it was important to remain faithful to L P Hartley’s book, which saw lengthy and admiring descriptions of the male body from its young protagonist Leo.

Pete Travis, the director, said: “We were pretty restrained compared with the book.

“I think we were trying to be truthful. There’s something about the contrast there which I quite liked, between a man who was free and a girl who was trapped.

“That’s part of the reason we wanted to do that.

“Ted was swimming, and a man wouldn’t have been wearing a swimming costume in that period, especially if he was working class.”

He added: “And he’s got a cute bum so why not show it? I’m not going to cover him up if I don’t need to.”

When asked whether the scene will be remembered as fondly as Colin Firth in the lake in 1995, Hodges joked: “If that’s the case, I will take that.”

The Go-Between tells the story of Leo, a 12-year-old boy who spends the summer with a friend at a stately home and becomes unwittingly embroiled in a doomed love story.

It features one of the most famous opening lines in all of English literature: “The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there."

This version will star Jim Broadbent as the elderly Leo and Vanessa Redgrave as Marian. Joanna Vanderham will play the young Marian, alongside Batt, Stephen Campbell Moore as Trimingham and Lesley Manville as Mrs Maudsley.

It will be the third in the BBC One season of early 20th century literary adaptations, to be broadcast consecutively on Sunday nights throughout September.

J'ai hâte ! Je crois que c'est l'adaptation que j'attendais le plus avec Lady Chatterley's Lover.

C'est malin, maintenant j'ai envie de voir le film de Losey qui est réalisateur que j'adore...et je ne vais pas pouvoir le trouver ! Effectivement, la traduction française sortie chez 10/18 est épuisée. Heureusement qu'il y a les bibliothèques !

Le roman se trouve assez facilement d'occasion chez 10/18 (c'est une honte qu'un tel classique ne soit plus édité chez nous ! )

La bande-annonce de l'adaptation BBC vient d'être mise en ligne et je la trouve vraiment très belle

Je vais chercher une version en streaming sur internet parce que le DVD n'existe pas. Sur la Fnac, il y a même une VHS en vente !!!

Effectivement il se trouve facilement sur les sites de vente d'occasions avec la belle Julie Christie en couverture.

Oui, on peut trouver le DVD uniquement en zone 2 anglais je crois ...

@Emjy : Je suis contente, j'ai trouvé "Le messager" de Joseph Losey ! En revanche, c'est la version française...on ne peut pas tout avoir !!!

Je ne savais même pas qu'une version française de ce film existait ! Hâte d'avoir ton avis Titine
