The Brontës at Haworth, Ann Dinsdale

The three Brontë sisters - Charlotte, Emily and Anne - moved to Haworth Parsonage as children in 1820. Here, on the edge of the wild Yorkshire Moors, they wrote some of the most memorable and best-loved novels in the English language.
This book presents a detailed picture of the Brontës' lives at Haworth, recounting the story of each member of the family and describing the world in which they lived. It goes on to consider the Brontës' poetry and novels in their socio-historic context, including the critical reception they received, and the developments since their deaths that have led to Haworth becoming a world-famous literary shrine. Illustrated with rarely seen images from the Brontë Parsonage Museum archive, the text is complemented by evocative photographs of Haworth and the surrounding countryside.
Here is Charlotte's copy of a portrait of her mother, who died when the eldest of her six children was just seven years of age; Emily's drawing of her dog, Keeper, who spent many nights moaning at her bedroom door after her early death; contemporary observations of their brother, Branwell, whose talent declined into alcoholism; Charlotte's haunting description of the moor and the "blue tints, the pale mists, the waves and shadows of the horizon" that were Anne's delight.Such telling details in words and pictures combine to provide an insight into the lives of the authors of "Jane Eyre", "Wuthering Heights" and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" that will delight and illuminate anyone who admires or is studying them.

Ann Dinsdale is librarian at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth, West Yorkshire, home of the world's largest collection of Brontëana. She writes and lectures on aspects of the Brontës' lives and has a particular interest in social conditions in mid-nineteenth-century Haworth. She is the author of "Old Haworth", a collection of historic views of Haworth, published in 1999.

Simon Warner is a widely published photographer of the British landscape. He has illustrated three National Trail Guides and is the author of "Discovering West Yorkshire". His exhibitions include "High Tide", a compartive study of English and Dutch coastlines, and "Leaving Home", a series of video installations at the Brontë Parsonage Museum.


Voici un très beau livre que je vous recommande fortement, même pour ceux qui connaissent déjà bien la vie des Brontë. Dans ce cas-là, c'est vrai que vous n'apprendrez peut être rien de nouveau, mais les photos et les chapitres consacrés à la vie à Haworth ou bien celui sur l'héritage des Brontë vous intéresseront sûrement!

Le livre s'ouvre sur une chronologie reprenant les grands faits de la vie des Brontë.
Puis la première partie s'intéresse à chaque membre de la famille: Partick Brontë, Maria Branwell, Elizabeth Branwell, Maria and Elizabeth Brontë, Charlotte Brontë, Branwell Brontë, Emily Brontë, Anne Bronteë, et les servantes qui se sont succédées au presbytère.
Ensuite vient la partie consacrée aux oeuvres des Brontës, qui traite de leurs peintures et dessins, poèmes et bien sûr livres:
Il y a également une partie sur le milieu des Brontës, expliquant le contexte à Haworth à cette épode, les condtions de vie, le presbytère en lui-même et le cercle social des Brontës.
Et pour finir, une partie sur l'héritage des Brontë.

Une très belle lecture, où l'on apprend plus ou moins de choses selon ses précédentes lectures autours des Brontë, mais un livre indispensable pour tout "fan"!

Il a l'air très intéressant en effet. On dirait qu'il y a beaucoup de photos non ? C'est surement un plus par rapport à d'autres biographies ? Je note en tous cas car même si j'en ai quelques unes dans ma PàL, je n'ai encore lu aucun livre consacré à la vie de la famille Brontë. Merci pour l'info Lunaë

@Resmiranda: c'est clair que les photos sont un gros plus! On découvre plein de lieux ayant inspirés les Brontës. C'est vraiment un livre très bien fait!

Je n'avais pas encore vu que tu conseillais ce livre Lunaë mais j'ai très envie de le découvrir, ça a l'air d'être un bel ouvrage à posséder si on aime l'univers de la famille Brontë en effet!

Quand il va sortir en 2013, j'aimerais bien me le prendre
ca a l'air vachement sympa!
