Surprise ! Une mini-série adaptée du roman Grandeur & Décadence d'Evelyn Waugh se prépare pour BBC2. Le tournage commence en juillet

According to Deadline, Eva Longoria is in final talks to join British comedian Jack Whitehall in BBC’s Decline and Fall, a project adapted by James Wood from Evelyn Waugh’s classic social satire. Guillem Morales is set to direct and will start principal photography on July 18th.

Set in 1920s Wales, the story is a bitingly funny satire that follows the life and times of hapless Paul Pennyfeather (Whitehall) who is sent down from Oxford after a wild, drunken party and finds himself qualifying for the position of schoolmaster at a boys’ private school in Wales. There he meets the delectable Margot Beste-Chetwynde (Longoria), the wealthy, powerful, and beautiful South American woman, who becomes the object of his affections.

Ce sera parfait pour notre challenge années 2O !

Evelyn Waugh est très peu adapté à l'écran, en plus. Je trouve que ce projet est une très bonne nouvelle

C'est vrai que c'est rare pour Waugh, c'est d'autant plus tentant. J'ai quand même un doute au sujet d'Eva Longoria, mais bon pourquoi pas...

Je suis également intéressée par cette adaptation, car l’œuvre d' Evelyn Waugh est assez peu adaptée.
La présence d'Eva Longaria est un peu incongrue - je ne la connais qu'à travers Desperate Housewive - mais cela ne diminue en rien mon intérêt.

Deux noms viennent de s'ajouter : David Suchet et Douglas Hodge.

Decline And Fall sees Paul Pennyfeather (Whitehall) as an inoffensive divinity student at Oxford University in the 1920s, who is wrongly dismissed for indecent exposure having been made the victim of a prank by The Bollinger Club.

David Suchet will play Dr Fagan, the headmaster of Llanabba, an obscure public school in Wales where Paul first finds employment and works with fellow teacher Grimes (Hodge). It is at the school that he meets the Honourable Mrs Margot Beste-Chetwynde (Longoria), who is the mother of one of the pupils.

For Paul it is love at first sight, but little does he know the surprises that lie ahead of him when he agrees to tutor her son over the summer holidays.

Jack Whitehall says: “I am extremely pleased to be a part of this amazing adaptation by James Wood. I’ve been a fan of this book since I read it as a teenager, and I just hope that I can do it justice.”

Shane Allen, Controller of BBC Comedy Commissioning, says: “One of the greatest comic novels of all time, this satirical masterpiece is long overdue a television debut. Waugh deploys comedy and tragedy to point up prevailing institutional corruption and the dehumanising consequences of elitism, very timely and apposite for today. James has done a terrific job of getting to the core of it, and the writing has attracted a fantastic cast.”

BBC Two has released a first look picture of actor and comedian Jack Whitehall (Bad Education) as Paul Pennyfeather, the hapless yet lovable protagonist of new three-part period comedy, Decline And Fall.

An adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s classic comedy satire,  Decline and Fall is set mainly in a fictional public school in the Welsh countryside, and filmed in over 70 locations around Wales.

Written by James Wood (Rev), the comedy also stars, David Suchet (Agatha Christie’s Poirot), Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives), Douglas Hodge (The Night Manager), Stephen Graham (The Secret Agent), Vincent Franklin (Cucumber) and Jason Watkins (W1A).

Of his casting as Paul Pennyfeather, Jack Whitehall says: “I am extremely pleased to be a part of this amazing adaptation by James Wood. I’ve been a fan of this book since I read it as a teenager and I just hope that I can do it justice..”

Decline And Fall will air on BBC Two later this year.

Mon intérêt est directement retombé lorsque j'ai vu son nom... Donc je lirai juste le livre que je ne connaissais pas.

A voir. Son rôle ne sera peut-être pas important ?

Je n'ai pas (encore) lu le roman mais d'après le synopsis et le résumé du livre, elle aura un rôle majeur.

Même si je n'aime pas spécialement cette actrice (à vrai dire, elle me laisse plutôt indifférente ), je jetterai un œil à la série. Les adaptations d'Evelyn Waugh sont trop rares pour que je les boude
