Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, une pièce de théâtre Harry Potter pour 2016

C'est ce que JK Rowling vient d'annoncer. Une pièce sur l'univers d'Harry Potter (plus spécialement sur James et Lily apparemment) sera jouée à partir de l'année prochaine à Londres, dans le West End.

“It will tell a new story, which is the result of a collaboration between writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany and myself,” she wrote on Twitter.

Rowling’s website stated that the play would receive its world premiere at London’s Palace Theatre in the summer of 2016. Tickets will go on sale this autumn.

On Twitter, Rowling described Thorne, Tiffany and producer Sonia Friedman as “a dream team.” “I’ve had countless offers to extend Harry’s story over the years, but Jack, John and Sonia Friedman are a dream team!,” she wrote.

“It has been a huge pleasure to share with them (and soon, with you!) this untold part of Harry’s story,” she added in a series of Tweets on Friday.

Rowling ‏revealed that the story “is not a prequel,” but added: “I don’t want to say too much more, because I don’t want to spoil what I know will be a real treat for fans.”

Rowling addressed the issue of her choice of medium for the story. “To answer one inevitable (and reasonable!) question — why isn’t #CursedChild a new novel? — I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story,” she wrote.

Rowling began the series of Tweets on Friday by describing it as “a very special day for two reasons.” The first was that “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” her debut novel and the first in the Harry Potter series, was published in the U.K. 18 years ago. It was published in the U.S. under the title “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” in 1998.

Rowling first revealed plans for the play in December 2013. Her website stated at the time that the story would cover Harry Potter’s “early years,” and would offer “a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard.”

“What was it like to be the boy in the cupboard under the stairs? This brand new play, which will be developed for the U.K. theater, will explore the previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast,” the website stated. “Featuring some of our favorite characters from the Harry Potter books, this new work will offer a unique insight into the heart and mind of the now legendary young wizard. A seemingly ordinary boy, but one for whom Destiny has plans.”

In his column for the Daily Mail on Friday, Baz Bamigboye claimed that the play would also explore the lives of Harry Potter’s murdered parents, Lily Evans Potter and James Potter, before they were killed by Lord Voldemort. Bamigboye added that it may also look at the relationship between siblings Lily and Petunia, who was a muggle like the rest of her family, and the friendship between Lily and Severus Snape during their schooldays at Hogwarts. Another friend, Remus Lupin, may also figure in the story, Bamigboye said.

The website for the Palace Theatre backs up Bamigboye’s claim. It states that the play “will explore the backstory leading up to Harry’s parents untimely death at the hands of Lord Voldemort.”

According to Rowling’s website on Friday, the play will be produced by Sonia Friedman Prods., Colin Callender’s Playground Entertainment and Harry Potter Theatrical Prods. Movement will be directed by Steven Hoggett, set designs by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, lighting by Neil Austin, music by Imogen Heap, sound by Gareth Fry and special effects by Jeremy Chernick.

Thorne writes for theater, film, television and radio. His theater credits include “Hope” and “Let the Right One In,” both directed by Tiffany. His movie credits include “War Book,” “A Long Way Down” and “The Scouting Book for Boys.” For television his credits include “The Last Panthers,” “Don’t Take My Baby,” “This Is England,” “The Fades,” “Glue” and “Cast-Offs.” In 2012, he won two BAFTAs for “The Fades” and “This Is England 88.”

Tiffany’s theater credits include “Once,” “Let the Right One In” and “Black Watch,” for which he won an Olivier. As associate director of the Royal Court, his work includes “The Twits,” “Hope” and “The Pass.”

Hoggett has previously collaborated with Tiffany on “The Twits,” “Let the Right One In” and “Black Watch.” Hoggett was a founding co-artistic director of Frantic Assembly for which his credits include “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” His film credits include “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

Jones is the artistic director of Theatre for One in New York. Her West End set design credits include “Let the Right One In” and “Spring Awakening.” On Broadway her credits include “American Idiot,” for which she won the Tony Award for best scenic design of a musical, “Spring Awakening,” for which she was Tony nominated, and “Everyday Rapture.” Jones made her debut at The Metropolitan Opera in 2012 with her designs for “Rigoletto.”

Lindsay’s theater credits include “Bend It Like Beckham” and “American Psycho.” Lindsay, who also designs for opera, dance, film and television, won the 2008 Tony for outstanding costume design for “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” on Broadway.

Heap is also known as one half of Frou Frou. Among her four solo albums, she has gathered four Grammy nominations, winning best engineered album, non-classical, for “Ellipse.” In 2010 she received the Ivor Novello Award for international achievement.

The Palace Theatre has housed some blockbuster productions in the past. It was home to “Jesus Christ Superstar” from 1972 until 1980, and “Les Miserables,” which opened in 1985, ran there for 19 years. At present it hosts “The Commitments,” which will close in November.

Like you, we had so many questions and luckily for us, the play’s director John Tiffany and its writer Jack Thorne were on hand to answer some of them.

Bafta-winning writer Jack Thorne was elated by the chance to delve deeper into the wizarding world.

‘Obviously I loved it when we decided to tell this story in two parts,’ Jack tells us, ‘because I got to spend more time with the characters and what an honour that has been.

‘It continues to be unbelievable and amazing that I’ve been given this extraordinary chance to bring Harry Potter to the stage. As a fan, who just devoured the books and the films, this couldn’t be more exciting for me.’

The significance of the stage play is not lost on Tony and Olivier Award-winning director John Tiffany. He feels that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a unique production, and we’re inclined to agree.

‘I’ve never worked on anything quite like this before,’ he says. ‘Usually in theatre you’re adapting existing material or creating an entirely new play. With the Cursed Child we have been given the unique opportunity to explore some of the most cherished books and beloved characters ever written, yet work with J.K. Rowling to tell a story from that world that no one yet knows – it’s exhilarating.

‘It shares a scale and ambition with all the Harry Potter stories so in order to do this justice we have decided to present the play in two parts.’

C'est sympa et j'aimerais bien la voir mais je ne peux pas m'empêcher de penser que JKR use le filon jusqu'à la corde.

Le texte de la pièce de Jack Thorne sort en France le 14 octobre chez Gallimard :

J'ai vu quelques avis très positifs sur la pièce ces derniers jours, je suis curieuse de voir ce que ça donne!

Je suis très curieuse aussi de découvrir ce texte. Je ne peux m'empêcher de vouloir retrouver l'univers de J. K. Rowling pour prolonger un peu le plaisir après avoir lu et vu la saga d'origine.

Hier, 31 juillet était la sortie officielle en anglais. Ma fille, qui était à Londres pour quelques jours, l'a rapporté dans ses bagages.
J'ai beaucoup rigolé, car lorsqu'on en avait parlé, elle m'avait dit qu'il n'était pas question qu'elle paye pour le lire (genre je vais le trouver sur internet en ebook...). Bon avec sa copine elles avaient fait les studios Harry Potter (pour la seconde fois )acheté des fringues HP chez Primark et des protège passeport et carte de transport HP chez Forbidden planet... elles étaient donc dans le trip...

15 £ en promo (au lieu de 20 !) chez WH Smith à St Pancrace. Sur Amazon uk, il est à 10£ + port pour la France et Amazon.fr à 16,30 €, ce qui fait que ce n'était pas une affaire, mais symbolique : l'avoir rapporté de Londres le jour de sa sortie !

Sa copine l'a démarré dans l'Eurostar du retour et a plutôt apprécié. J'ai mis une option dessus dès que possible...
De ce que j'en ai vu, c'est le texte de la pièce (les deux parties) donc des dialogues....

Je suis curieuse d'avoir ton avis ! J'hésite encore à la lire ...

Je pensais l'acheter au moment de sa sortie en France et le lire dans la foulée mais ce que vous en dites me fait un peu peur, notamment la forme théâtrale : je n'ai rien contre la lecture de pièces de théâtre mais Harry Potter en livre pour moi c'est forcément un roman...
J'attends vos critiques avec impatience ceci dit car si vous détestez toutes, je laisserais tomber

Ma fille a commencé hier soir et m'a dit qu'elle a eu du mal à le poser, pour ne pas tout lire d'une traite. Elle a été agréablement surprise, mais n'est pas fan de la forme théâtrale, qui normalement n'est pas faite pour être lu.
Il y a un petit truc qui l'a gêné, mais je n'ai pas voulu savoir quoi, pour ne pas me faire de spoiler...
Par contre, elle trouve que le contenu de l'histoire ressemble à des fan fics lues ça et là...
La seule chose qu'elle m'ait dite, c'est qu'il y a beaucoup d'aller et retour dans le temps et que la pièce commence exactement à la fin du tome 7, sur le quai 9 3/4, et on retrouve même la phrase de Harry à son fils à propos de son prénom double (Albus Severus)...
Sinon le niveau d'anglais est assez simple...

Sinon je n'ai pas Instagram et ça ne me manque pas...

Je n'ai pas pu résister, je l'ai acheté hier et l'ai lu la même journée. J'avais une grosse réserve au début, puisqu'il a été coécrit, puis aussi à cause du format. Pour ce qui est du script, il y a beaucoup de détails entre les dialogues, donc on oublie presque que s'en est un. C'est une totale réimmersion dans le monde de la magie, la pièce doit vraiment être superbe!

Concernant l'histoire, je ne peux rien dire sans dévoiler des éléments de l'intrigue, donc je vais me limiter à dire qu'on revoit les personnages connus ainsi que certains enfants des personnages (l'histoire se passe environ 20 ans plus tard). J'ai certains bémols, mais dans l'ensemble je suis plutôt satisfaite étant donné la nature du livre, plus court (en format roman, nous aurions sûrement été choyés avec plus du double de pages!). Les personnages sont bien croqués, on y retrouve le monde que l'on aime, une histoire en accord avec les précédentes et puis quelques scènes vraiment trop chouettes! Lisez-le!

Je pense l'acheter quand il sortira en poche VO, parce que 16 euros, c'est un peu cher pour mon budget en ce moment. C'est dommage car il me fait super envie!!

Je me le prendrai quand même. Ça sera un de mes petits plaisirs.

J'ai appris aujourd'hui une révélation qui figure dans la pièce et qui je dois dire m'a bien coupé dans mon envie de lire la pièce tellement je l'ai trouvé nulle et sans intérêt... Du coup, je pense que je vais privilégier l'emprunt en bibliothèque.

Par contre, petit tuyau pour celles qui vont à Londres prochainement et pensent l'acheter en VO : certaines librairies comme Waterstone's et Hatchards le vendent actuellement à moitié prix, autrement dit 10 £ au lieu de 20 £

J'espère que la pièce de theatre sortira en dvd.

Je suis en train de lire la pièce (il me reste juste le dernier acte) et je dois dire que cette lecture me plait beaucoup! Je ne pensais vraiment pas craquer, mais les bonnes critiques m'ont fait changer d'avis et je ne regrette pas... Bon, c'est vraiment fait pour les fans qui veulent absolument savoir ce qui se passe après. Mais je trouve l'idée de base assez ingénieuse, car elle permet de faire beaucoup de choses (désolée, je ne veux rien spoiler...). En tout cas, je suis plutôt agréablement surprise et j'ai hâte de lire la fin!

J'aimerais aller voir la pièce pendant mon séjour en Angleterre. Je pense que ça serait une superbe expérience!

J'avais regardé un peu, les séances étaient blindées. En plus la pièce est en deux parties, il faut donc réserver soit 2 soirées, soit 1 séance tôt, aller dîner, puis revenir pour la deuxième partie...
Je te souhaite de trouver des places, mais il faut s'y prendre longtemps à l'avance j'ai l'impression....

Je viens de terminer la première partie et je suis un peu déçue. J'ai l'impression d'un énorme "previously on". Certaines scènes importantes sont carrément remontrées. D'autres épisodes importants sont racontés. Bon jusque là OK. Mais les épisodes de l'histoire en cours sont tellement une copie des épisodes originaux, juste avec d'autres personnages, que j'ai eu par moment l'impression d'une fan fic, qui reprend les éléments magiques (choixpeau, polynectar, Poudlard express, etc...).
Bon, on fait la connaissance des enfants d'Harry et Ginny, de Ron et d'Hermione et même de Drago Malefoy. Là on a quelque chose d'un peu original et je dois dire que je ne verrai plus jamais la vendeuse de bonbons du Poudlard Express du même œil...

Ma fille me dit que l'action arrive, mais je trouve qu'elle met du temps... limite je me suis dit, que si j'allais voir la pièce la première partie serait presque à zapper (évidemment non, car il se passe quand même quelque chose à la presque toute fin, mais bon !)

A part ça le vocabulaire est très simple et franchement la lecture ne nécessite pas un niveau d'anglais très élevé.
