| ... avez-vous lu Emma Brown? - Citation :
- When Charlotte Brontë died in 1855, she had written the first two chapters of a new novel, which introduced a lost girl and signalled the author's most compelling work since Jane Eyre. Now, almost 150 years later, Clare Boylan has returned to this intriguing beginning and turned it into an astonishing story of mystery, atmosphere and age-turning suspense.
The arrival of Conway Fitzgibbon at Fushia Lodge with his daughter Matilda is a source of delight to the headmistress, Miss Wilcox. The unsuccessful ladies'school is eager for new pupils, particularly one so finely dressed and boasting a father who is "quite the gentleman". But as Christmas approaches, and Miss Wilcox inquires about arrangements for the holidays, she is for a schock. Conway Fitzbibbon, like the address he left behind, does not exist...
"Beautifully written... Pitch perfect. Brontë's waspish tone is perfectly recreated in observations that alight with a pointed sting... So effective is this combination of tension and tenderness at capturing Brontë's spirit that the minute you emerge from Clare Boylan's book you head straight for the bookshelf to reimmerse yourself in a world of Charlotte's making. Surely there is no better recommendation?"

- Citation :
- The development of the plot was in part inspired by Charlotte's growing interest in social conditions in London, which she visited on a number of occasions after her success, and where she soon wearied of the tourist attractions (including the Great Exhibition) and dismayed her hosts by visiting Bethlehem Hospital, the Foundling Hospital, Pentonville Prison and Newgate Prison, at which latter site she spoke to a young woman who was to hang for the murder of her child, and held her hand. (...) For any woman in a strange city to visit its prisons and mental hospital would take a good deal of courage, but when you think of what nineteenth-century mad houses and jails were like, and how shy and refined Charlotte was, this was an incredible feat of daring. Why did she do it? I became convinced it was the reason all writers do crazy things - for research. She wanted to broaden her canvas. She wanted, as Dickens had done, to write a great London novel
